Smash Your New Year’s Resolutions with Physiotherapy!

As movement experts, we can offer a range of support as you work toward better health and wellness in the new year. From physical assessments to pain management to customized fitness programs, we’ll help you keep your New Year’s resolutions all year long.

There are many different ways our team can help you achieve your health, wellness, and fitness goals this year. We can…

  • Conduct a comprehensive assessment to identify specific areas of weakness, impairment, or dysfunction, so you know exactly where to focus your efforts.
  • Work with you to resolve or manage persistent pain, mobility restrictions, or chronic conditions that might be holding you back from achieving your goals, such as the following:
    • Balance or gait issues
    • Chronic pain
    • Arthritis
    • Underlying or unresolved injuries
  • Help you develop a personalized exercise program that addresses your unique goals, interests, and abilities.
  • Offer general health and wellness information in addition to exercise, such as nutritional counseling or stress reduction techniques.
  • Provide structure and support so you don’t bite off more than you can chew (and become frustrated in the process).

“My experience at this location was great from day one until the end of my treatment. The reception staff were helpful and friendly. My therapist, Himanshu, was gentle and understanding about my situation and he got me back on track in a short time!”

Thank You, Himanshu!

Ability Physiotherapy is proud to offer FAME, a unique group exercise program specially designed to help people recover after a stroke.

FAME stands for Fitness and Mobility Exercise, which gives you a good sense of what the FAME program can offer stroke survivors. Furthermore, the group setting encourages social interaction and motivation, which are crucial (and often overlooked) components of the rehabilitation process.

Improve your walking speed, balance, and overall mobility. This will make it easier to participate in daily activities and reduce your fall risk.

Strength-training exercises rebuild muscle mass and improve physical stamina for better functionality.

Suffering one stroke makes you more likely to suffer another, but improving your heart health with FAME sessions can help lower risk.

We generally recommend the FAME program for stroke survivors who meet the following criteria:

  • Stand for at least five minutes
  • Walk 10 meters (with or without a walking aid)
  • Follow instructions and communicate with the instructor

While some people have turned to snowblowers to clear their sidewalks and driveways, we’re still fans of the old-fashioned way – if for no other reason than it’s an excellent means of getting your heart pumping.

You just need to follow a few simple tips to help prevent an injury:

The cold weather puts you at a higher risk of suffering muscle strain, so bundle up and stay warm.

Shoveling snow is a great workout, which means you need to warm up your body before you get started. Work through simple mobility exercises targeting your arms, shoulders, back, and legs.

It’s easy to fall into awkward postures when shoveling snow, so make sure you’re using good form (like lifting with the spine in a good position and avoiding rounding the back or twisting repeatedly to one side). Need some pointers? Our therapists are happy to help!

Have you or a loved one recently suffered a stroke or been diagnosed with a neurological condition, such as Parkinson’s disease? These conditions affect the connection between your body and your brain – and as such, benefit immensely from specialized therapy that focuses on that connection.

That’s where neuromuscular rehabilitation comes in. Unlike musculoskeletal (MSK) rehabilitation, which addresses injuries and disorders affecting muscles, joints, and bones, neuromuscular rehab goes a step further. It focuses on reconnecting communication between your brain, nerves, and overall musculoskeletal system, helping to improve your movement patterns,  restore balance, and reduce muscle weakness.

No Waiting Times
  • You can begin your treatment immediately, and we provide seamless care that transitions you from hospital support to community reintegration.
Personalized Care Plans
  • We’ll work with you and other members of your care team to develop a program that addresses your specific needs so you can more efficiently meet your goals.
An Emphasis on Functionality
  • Neuromuscular rehab helps improve coordination, mobility, and muscle strength – but ultimately, we want to help you perform daily activities more easily so you can maintain or regain your independence.

Because of its emphasis on the brain-body connection, neuromuscular rehab is an excellent choice for several neurological conditions, including stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, brain injury, multiple sclerosis, and more.
