The Difference Between Back Pain and Sciatica

Have you been told your persistent lower back pain is really sciatica? Did you know specific signs and symptoms can clarify what condition you’re dealing with? Far too often, these terms are used interchangeably or, worse yet, inaccurately. Fortunately, at Ability, our skilled physiotherapists can clear it up for you and set you on the right path to relief!

Back pain and sciatica can be confusing and even intimidating, especially when you’re not sure what’s causing your discomfort. Whether from a car accident, lifting something heavy, or seemingly out of nowhere, both back pain and sciatica seem to have similar causes and even share some symptoms.

That’s where physiotherapy comes in. Physiotherapy is highly effective for both conditions. It helps reduce pain, improves mobility, and, most importantly, tackles the underlying issues to prevent future discomfort. With a tailored treatment plan, you can get back to doing what you love, pain-free.

Back pain and sciatica are sometimes used interchangeably, but they’re not the same. Lower back pain is generally localized, affecting the lumbar region of the spine. It can arise from muscle strains, herniated discs, or prolonged poor posture.

It’s crucial to know the difference between the two because the treatment approaches differ. For example, sciatica might require attention to nerve compression issues, while lower back pain could be more muscle-related.

So, if you’re tired of enduring persistent pain, take action and call to schedule an appointment with our spine experts. Let us help you understand your condition and guide you toward effective relief.

“I’ve visited three physiotherapy clinics in the past, but it was only at Ability Physiotherapy & Wellness SE that I felt my health being restored. My physiotherapist, Himanshu Singla, approached my lumbar back and scapula pain with such care and understanding. He took the time to diagnose the underlying cause of my pain, carefully examining my core muscles to identify the stiffness rather than jumping straight into treatment. I genuinely admire his techniques; they reflect his deep knowledge and dedication to helping his patients. It’s incredibly comforting to know that I’m in such capable hands.”

Thank You, Himanshu!

Ability Physiotherapy is proud to offer FAME, a unique group exercise program specially designed to help people recover after a stroke.

FAME stands for Fitness and Mobility Exercise, which gives you a good sense of what the FAME program can offer stroke survivors. Furthermore, the group setting encourages social interaction and motivation, which are crucial (and often overlooked) components of the rehabilitation process.

Improve your walking speed, balance, and overall mobility. This will make it easier to participate in daily activities and reduce your fall risk.

Strength-training exercises rebuild muscle mass and improve physical stamina for better functionality.

Suffering one stroke makes you more likely to suffer another, but improving your heart health with FAME sessions can help lower risk.

We generally recommend the FAME program for stroke survivors who meet the following criteria:

  • Stand for at least five minutes
  • Walk 10 meters (with or without a walking aid)
  • Follow instructions and communicate with the instructor

This year, don’t forget the most important Valentine of all: your heart! With February being the month of love and American Heart Month, here are a few tips to combine them into one fabulous celebration:

  • Try a heart-healthy treat: Pomegranate seeds, good dark chocolate, and sweet strawberries are all delicious alternatives to candy hearts.
  • Take a ballroom dance class with your sweetheart: Nothing’s more romantic than a sweeping waltz or sultry tango. But ballroom dancing is also a great cardio workout–making it the perfect date night for American Heart Month!
  • Sink into a relaxing bubble bath: Stress contributes to cardiovascular disease, so this month, set aside time to rest and relax with a bubble bath. Dim the lights, burn a few candles, and settle down with your favorite romantic read.

If you are an athlete, you know the amount of dedication that it takes to be good at your sport. Whether you’re preparing for a marathon, competition, recital, or big game, the amount of training and preparation is extensive. You have to train your muscles and tissues to perform in the ways you want them to, which can ultimately lead to pain and soreness. This is a minor setback, but it doesn’t change the fact that it temporarily impedes your training process.

Therapeutic massage therapy is commonly used in athletes whose muscles may have experienced extended periods of overuse. It helps in loosening up any tight areas and making recovery quicker and easier – so you can get back on track to accomplishing your end goal.

Your soft tissues work hard to make sure your body is functioning correctly, so it is important to help optimize their health and function. If you are an athlete looking for therapeutic massage services, request an appointment from Ability Physiotherapy. Our physiotherapists are happy to discuss our massage service with you and how it will benefit your physical performance. Your sport is important to you – we want to help get you back in the game!
