We recently worked with a patient–let’s call him Michael–who learned the hard way about the importance of regular physiotherapy for maintaining back health. Michael had never given much thought to the state of his back until he volunteered to help a friend move. While struggling to drag a heavy desk up a flight of stairs, he felt a sudden, sharp pain in his lower back. And that was just the beginning.
Michael hoped the pain would go away on its own in a few days, but instead, it worsened. It was particularly intense first thing in the morning, and he struggled to straighten his spine, which made daily activities difficult. He frequently experienced painful back spasms as well.
Eventually, Michael visited the physiotherapists at Ability Physiotherapy for help. We confirmed that he had strained his back muscles while attempting to lift that heavy desk, and we developed a personalized treatment plan to help him rehabilitate.
While Michael did suffer his injury in large part because he tried to lift something too heavy for him, that doesn’t quite tell the whole story. Michael was fairly sedentary. He had an office job and didn’t work out as often as he’d like, and his core, back, and leg muscles were quite weak. He’d also developed some poor postural habits over the years.
If Michael had addressed these issues earlier (and used proper lifting techniques while helping his friend move), he would have been much less likely to suffer an injury–or his injury wouldn’t have been as severe. Like many people, Michael hadn’t realized how beneficial regular physiotherapy is for maintaining back health.
Today, we want to help you avoid Michael’s mistakes by exploring how our physiotherapists work to improve the health of your back and spine.
Physiotherapy Techniques for Maintaining Back Health
Physiotherapy for maintaining back health involves a blend of various interventions. While we always tailor our treatment plans to meet your unique needs, here are some of the techniques we might include:
Pain Management
- If you’re currently dealing with back pain, we can help you reduce it so you can work on improving your back health. We might use hands-on manual therapy techniques (like soft tissue manipulation) or various pain-relieving modalities (like electrical stimulation).
Mobility Exercises
- Improving your back’s range of motion will make it easier for you to move and exercise. We’ll show you simple stretches to improve your spine’s mobility.
Strengthening Exercises
- A strong back is a healthy back! Strengthening your core muscles provides better support to your spine, helping to relieve pressure and reducing your risk of injury. We’ll show you exercises tailored to your needs and abilities, and we’ll increase their intensity as you improve.
Postural Assessments
- Maintaining proper posture is also essential for a healthy back, although “proper posture” involves more than just “standing up straight.” Our physiotherapists will assess your current posture and provide tips for keeping yourself in alignment as you move throughout your day–and you should be moving regularly! In fact, we can also help you develop strategies to counteract the negative effects of prolonged sitting.
Other Tips and Strategies
Finally, we can share various strategies for maintaining back health based on your needs. We can coach you in proper lifting techniques, suggest ergonomic adjustments to protect your back at work, and prescribe at-home exercises to keep you moving.
